Internationally Renowned Otolaryngologist Speaks at 2011 ORL Frontiers

Sixty-five physicians and other healthcare professionals attended Otorhinolaryngology Frontiers 2011, which highlighted research endeavors and emerging technology in the diagnosis and management of common otolaryngologic clinical problems. Held on June 25, 2011, at the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine in the Texas Medical Center and sponsored by the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School, the CME event featured guest speaker Jamie Koufman, MD, FACS, director of the Voice Institute of New York.

Dr. Koufman is credited with introducing the concept of laryngopharyngeal reflux and exploring its impact on diseases of the larynx, differentiating it from gastroesophageal reflux disease. S he is the recipient of many awards, including the James E. Newcomb Award presented at the American Laryngological Association (ALA) annual meeting held in Chicago in April 2011.

“ORL Frontiers is an annual event that highlights the research productivity of members of the department,” says Ronda Alexander, MD, an assistant professor and assistant residency program director in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

The following presentations were given by the department residents and fellows:

• “Rib Cartilage Autograft versus Irradiated Rib Cartilage Homograft in Facial Plastics: A Rabbit Model” by Ibrahim Alava III, MD

• “Nasal Provocation Testing Unable to Identify Fungi-Sensitive Patients with Either Acoustic Rhinometry or Optical Rhinometry” by Garima Agarwal, MD

• “Assessment of Frontal Recess Fracture Patterns Using Triplanar CT Images” by Stephanie Herrera, MD

• “Long-term Analysis of Crural Cartilage Surgical Tip Techniques Designed to Change Rotation and Projection” by Tracy Byerly, MD

• “The Effects of the Type of Anesthesia on Nasal Blood Flow, Surgical Field Visibility and Bleeding During Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: A Randomized, Controlled Trial” by Fernando Gomez-Rivera, MD

• “Ossicular Chain Reconstruction Utilizing Titanium versus Hydroxyapatite Implants” by Yuri Gelfand, MD

• “Evaluating the Safety Profile of Intranasal Fluticasone Propionate Irrigations” by Li-Xing Man, MSc, MD, MPA.

Dr. Koufman, who has been practicing medicine for more than 30 years, closed the event with a challenging analysis of the past, present and future of American healthcare, with a focus on the economic pressures physicians face today in providing high-quality care.
